These Are the Apples...

Nicholas sold us 20 lb of Gravenstein apples at the Berkeley farmers' market. He said they were fresh from the tree, he had picked them that morning. I love not-quite-ripe apples! We tasted some...

When I told him about our plan, he pointed out that the chance anything will grow from the seeds was about one in a thousand, and if it did it would be a crabapple tree. The chance of growing a Gravenstein was maybe one in a million, he thought. I mentioned that Gravensteins were originally discovered from a chance seedling, and he said that all apples were like that. At Pomo Tierra farm, where he comes from, they grow them by grafting. Anyway, he shook my hand and introduced himself.

What This Is All About

This is where I will post pictures and thoughts as I drive across the country with my son, planting apple cores as we eat the apples. If you want to see the locations of the pictures (including apple planting sites) you will be able to follow us by clicking on this picture:
